The Client  MTX, a privately owned construction and engineering company delivering innovative and sustainable solutions to the public & private sectors, was contracted by the NHS Trust to deliver initially a single storey 28-bed ward with facility to go multi storey in the future.

THE CHALLENGE

Due to the COVID19 pandemic the initial single storey building was accelerated with the additional 2 floors added to the contract within 4 weeks and to be installed immediately after the ground floor, during the country’s quarantine/lockdown period.

THE OUTCOME

New design ground floor module steelwork to facilitate the addition of 2no. additional floor in the future, modular construction methods streamlined to accelerate production.

When the country entered ‘lockdown’ Kingston introduced a COVID daily meeting to review the key risks to delivering the project including restriction on the clients site, restricted supply within the supply chain, loss of workforce due to self isolation and changes in government guidelines. Discussion held with key suppliers of materials and despite 70% of the supply chain closing, and with careful planning materials were secured for the entire project.
The factory workforce was reduced by over 30% due to self isolation and shielding. Thanks to a committed workforce working safely, supplemented by carefully selected sub-contractors, manufacture was able to keep pace with the client program. The ground floor modules were successfully delivered in late March ahead of program and the manufacture of the following 2 floors were accelerated and successfully to site during the following 10 weeks
